Water // Brian Cheung
Brian Cheung is an artist, illustrator and graphic designer living in Melbourne, Australia. After several years of fruitless work as a freelance designer, he threw in the towel and spent a winter in northwest Iceland at Nes Artist Residency. Since then, Brian has traveled and exhibited extensively on a constant search for inspiration and perspective.
Recently, he wrapped up an eight-month string of residencies with time spent at La Wayaka Current in the far north of Norway, Sumburgh Head and Bressay lighthouses in Shetland, and the AARK residency in the Finnish archipelago.
Brian's latest series of water paintings were completed over several months in northern Europe, as a follow-up to an earlier collection painted during his time at Nes Artist Residency in Skagaströnd, Iceland.
Where the first series painted a portrait of a specific time and place (Iceland, September 2015 - January 2016), these new paintings seek to capture water in various forms across several locations. From the violent gales of Shetland to the calm ripples in the Finnish archipelago and the grey of the Baltic, these images point to an interconnectedness and commonality despite obvious contrasts in wind, color and light.
